Becoming a Global Eyecare Leader

For more than 50 years, we’ve supported private practice and delivered the best eyecare benefits nationwide. But like many industries, eyecare is changing—and becoming more global. Because we’re committed to private practice, we’re taking steps now to become a global leader in eyecare delivery.

How? By making investments that expand our business. We’re always looking for ways to develop stronger relationships with others that work with private practitioners.

Just recently, to enhance our contract lab network we invested in Perfect Optics®, an optical laboratory located near San Diego, CA. This helps us strengthen our relationship with Carl Zeiss Vision, a current Perfect Optics partner and one of the top lens manufacturers in the world.

We also recently expanded our lab business in the Southwest by acquiring Legends 4.0TM in Lewisville, TX. Legends 4.0 is VSP’s third wholly-owned lab, making us more competitive. And because Legends 4.0 is now part of our National Contract Lab Network, it gives VSP doctors another option when selecting a lab. It also gives us the potential to grow and expand.

I’m excited about these investments and how they’ll help us continue supporting private practice. What do you think about the changing eyecare industry?

I really appreciate the improvements you are making, regarding the premier lens technologies available to your members. I question though, why you have not allowed Nikon lenses a place on you availablilty chart? They are known as leaders in optics in other markets, and have, in my eyes, a superior product to many on the approved list. My patients want the procuct, but want to stay within plan parameters. I feel you have overlooked cutting edge technology and are doing a disservice to your subscribers by not allowing Nikon lenses to be a choice for VSP members.

Appreciate your response! Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. As you noted, there is certainly a value for "consistent" experience, and this provides the tension with my request for "choice". However, I do maintain that consistency is also at odds with differentiation, which is critically important to private practice doctors. It is difficult for me to see that competing with the large chains’ freedom to design unique, animated, interactive websites using any technology, while being ourselves limited to a single platform of structurally and visually similar website themes is "best".Please, please consider allowing us the option to link directly to our websites. Certainly this is a feature that adds value and exposure to the websites we already independently maintain. I for one would consider this to be a value-added offering.

Both VSP and Eyefinity strive to help private practices provide superior patient care through our services and business solutions. The websites listed on the "Find a VSP Doctor" directory are optometric-specific and have a consistent platform of features, such as staff biographies, articles on eyecare, online appointment scheduling and ReorderContacts.com. They are designed specifically for VSP doctors and provide the depth of information required to communicate effectively with patients — it’s all about providing patients with the best and most consistent online experience. -Rob

I would like to bring to your attention how I perceive VSP/Eyefinity’s revenue model of controlling private practitioners’ contact information, particularly web sites. As you note, eyecare is changing, and web sites are increasingly important for reaching customers and patients. In many respects, a web address is as vital a piece of contact information as a telephone number.Websites can also be a powerful differentiator for practices that wish to invest more in producing a higher quality web presence. However, as it currently stands, VSP/Eyefinity blocks the ability of private practice doctors to have their "Find a VSP Doctor" search results link directly to their external web site, only allowing links to those hosted by Eyefinity eWeb. Eyefinity does not even allow a link from the Eyefinity template-based web-site to an external website unless we pay a monthly fee, and even then, we still must have patients link to an Eyefinity-hosted web presence first. There is no way, paid or not, to have full control over the web site our patients see first when linking through VSP. This is not particularly private practice friendly, because it forces us to pay a monthly fee and maintain two websites, if we wish to have a web presence that is not hosted by Eyefinity eWeb itself. We cannot support local web design businesses in our community, and take advantage of the latest in Flash, AJAX, and other web technologies and have these results visible to VSP members in a single click. An argument could be made that Eyefinity supports a uniform quality of content, etc., but other web directories deal with this by first linking to a warning that a person is leaving the VSP/Eyefinity website to an external web address. This system appears to work well. I would hope you would help allow us some choice in web site providers.Thank you.
