Team Type 1 Assistant Director Gord Fraser was helping call the shots during Monday’s opening stage of the Tour of Missouri. The former Canadian national road champion won more than 200 races during a career that saw him compete in the Tour de France. In this exclusive question-and-answer session with VSP Vision Care, he shares some insight into the success Team Type 1’s Moises Aldape had in earning the Most Aggressive Rider jersey.
Was being in the breakaway today part of the plan?
Yes. It sets a precedent that the guys were switched on and ready to race their bikes. This is one of the biggest races in the country. Any representation is good for the sponsors and an avenue to broadcast our message about managing your diabetes. It also provides the best platform to reach our fans who are affected by diabetes.
What does this mean for Stage 2?
It puts us in a higher caravan order, which puts us in a better position to service our riders in the event there’s a problem for one of our riders (flat tire, crashes, etc.) sometimes that can mean the difference between getting back into the race or not. That’s some difference. Moises is going to wear the sprint jersey tomorrow so that’s good notoriety for the team. It means we mean business.
What is the overall goal for Team Type 1 for this race?
We came here to race. We’re not just going to sit back and be satisfied with the results we’ve had.
Is eyewear in cycling really that important, or is it just to look good?
It’s crucial, especially for the UV protection. It’s also very important for blocking debris, whether it’s insects or grime or rocks. It’s very important.
Where will you be on Stage 2?
I’ll be driving behind the winning breakaway with multiple Team Type 1 riders.
