New, online newsletter FOR our readers, BY our readers

VSP just launched a new, monthly e-newsletter called “EnVision.”  Formerly known as “Eye on Health,” we redesigned it, made it more engaging and interactive, and added real-time information and tips on eye health and eyewear fashion – based on feedback received from readers earlier this year.

Envision

EnVision will allow VSP members to have easy access to view their benefits, find a doctor, as well as view the hottest trends in eyewear.

Just for fun!
Each monthly edition will highlight a prize to give away to one lucky reader. The prizes range from vacation destinations to the hottest electronic gadgets.

I enjoyed the new e-newsletter. However, I felt the article on blueberries was misleading. Yes, blueberries have antioxidants (as with most fruits), but in order to get the minimum for the RDA you probable have to consume at least a cup every day. All research on antioxidants use much higher amounts than the RDA. The RDA was never meant to be used for prevention, just to avoid a deficiency. It is much easier to take a supplement and be assured that you are getting an all-natural, standardized level of antioxidant and in amounts too difficult to get with fresh fruit (assuming you get them from a good company). In addition, the material amounts of antioxidants in some fruits are in the parts we do not eat, like seeds and skins. For example, our Carotomax not only includes the active antioxidant of 31 servings of blueberries, but also antioxidant flavonoids of 1,995 carrots, 10 servings of cherries, 13 servings of limes, and 26 servings of red cabbage. It annoys me that so many magazines (and e-newsletters/blogs) tout the praises of fresh fruits and vegetables without taking the logical next step to show how much you need to consume to match prevention research.
