A couple of months ago when I got my eye exam, I opted to get a second pair of glasses for computer work, as well as for other “digital media” as they call it (e.g., tablets, smartphones). Since I spend practically my whole day on a computer and iPad, I thought it might be a good idea to give these glasses a try. But what are computer vision glasses?
That’s the cool part; they’re designed for optimal vision about an arm’s length in front of you. That’s farther away than reading glasses but quite a bit closer than regular distance glasses.
If you’re like me, and I know a lot of you are, you sit at your computer, or look at your smartphone, and have to squint to see the words on the screen. You probably even hunch forward to get a closer look. I’ll admit I used to catch myself just a few inches away from the screen. That’s just not good for your eyes—or your posture.
I used to try and wear my regular glasses when working, but I could tell they were too strong. At the same time, with no glasses at all, I would hunch forward. Computer vision glasses allow me to sit with proper posture and see the screen clearly—they’re even helpful with my phone. They’re great!
So are computer vision glasses right for you? If what I wrote above sounds frighteningly familiar, I’d highly recommend talking with your eye doctor. My new glasses have really made a difference in comfort throughout the day.
If you do get computer vision glasses, here are a few tips to help you maximize your VSP benefits:
- Check to see if you have a Computer Vision Care plan with your benefits. If you don’t, read Fashion Maven’s post about using your base plan for more than just regular glasses.
- If you like your current glasses but are a candidate for computer vision glasses, you may want to get computer vision glasses at your next visit.
- If you’re like me and can never seem to have enough glasses, get your computer vision glasses at the same time as a new pair of regular glasses. Most members get 30% off unlimited additional pairs of prescription glasses purchased on the same day with the same provider who performed the exam.
- If you have already used your benefit but want to invest in a pair of prescription computer vision glasses, you can still get 20% off your complete pair.
Check your benefits by logging into VSP.com. You can also call customer service at 1-800-877-7195.

Did you ever wonder where Buddy Holly got his iconic glasses? It’s quite an interesting story. His eyesight was terrible; he couldn’t even read the top line of the eye chart. But he didn’t want his glasses to affect his rebellious image. So he tried contact lenses, but he couldn’t deal with them on stage because they were too uncomfortable. Finally it was his eye doctor who found the perfect frames for him…and the rest is history.

Calling all guys! Are you thinking about getting a new pair of glasses or sunglasses but want a little help making the best selection possible? If so, you aren’t alone!
Our very own David C. is in the same frame selection cunundrum. So, we thought why not exploit David’s need for new eyewear to help all mankind out? First, we’ll offer David some expert tips. Then, we’ll let YOU select what frames David should get! I like it.
Here are the things every guy should consider when selecting the perfect frame:
1) Identify your face shape. Is it round, oval, square, or heart shaped?
2) What’s your shade? No, not your sunglass shade but your skin tone shade.
*Cool – pale with a rosey cast to skin
*Warm – golden, buttery or honey tones (Anyone else getting hungry?)
*Neutral – a blend of both which is olive
*Dark – tan or deep brown
3) Lifestyle. Active, gamer, techy etc.
4) Style. Are you bold, understated, preppy, trend setter?
Let’s see what David’s answers are:
1) Oval.
2) I would probably say a “cool” tone.
3) Professional who likes to be outside.
4) I like style…bold, but not too bold. Trends are good, but let’s not get crazy.
David also said: I have hazel eyes, so green and brown tend to work for me, but my head is big, so I need to go to the eye doctor and get my measurements so I don’t buy something that doesn’t fit…I hate that. I’m also tired of breaking my glasses because I just throw them on the couch and then forget about them.
Using Eyeconic, we entered David’s preferences to find a few frames that compliment his needs. I snapped a few pictures and here they are. Now YOU decide! Vote for David’s perfect frame in a comment below.

If your company offers VSP Vision Care, you should be aware of the creative options available when using the materials (lens and frame) portion of your benefit. I’m here to tell you it goes beyond your everyday glasses. There are a variety of prescription needs that can be addressed by changing your mindset about what your benefits can do for you. For example, let’s say your prescription hasn’t changed, your everyday pair of glasses are in great shape and you still love the style…yet you wish you could get:
Sunwear – cut down on squinting and harmful UVA/UVB rays by opting for prescription sunglasses.
Computer glasses – help reduce eyestrain while using computers and other digital devices with a mild prescription which can help combat symptoms of computer vision syndrome.
Sports glasses – stay on top of your game and keep your eyes safe with prescription sports goggles or wrap around styles rated for sports play.
Safety glasses – maybe you do a little wood work, welding or serious gardening in your spare time and need to protect those peepers with a pair safety glasses.
And the list goes on. Talk with your VSP doctor and get creative with your lens and frame benefits through your VSP plan. Wishes do come true! And don’t forget–you can use your flexible spending account (FSA) dollars for prescription eyewear.

Autumn colors have peaked all around the country. I savor the beauty in every leaf and tree. To see in detail is to gain perspective; the sharpness of November imagery reminds me keenly of my golden, jump-in-the-leaf-pile childhood.
One autumn that stands out for me in particular was the year I started kindergarten. The chalkboard was a blur to me, and I was shocked to discover that the other students could see it clearly. Things had always looked undefined and out of focus to me—how could I know otherwise when I had never before seen things clearly? All these years later, I still vividly remember putting on my first pair of glasses. I was able to see the intricate detail in trees, the sky, and the neighborhood as I rode home wearing them for the first time.
I took the VSP Eye Pledge because I truly treasure my vision, but also because I know what it’s like to not be able to see clearly. Please join me in taking the pledge. With just one click, you can provide much needed eyecare and eyewear to a child served by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Tyreke’s brother, Doc Evans, talks about needing glasses for the first time ever
Doc Evans, Tyreke Evans’ brother, just had his annual eye exam by Dr. Ryan Nakamura at Natomas Optometry. Doc is a musician, and good vision is important to him. During his eye exam, he discovered he needed glasses for the first time ever and shared that experience with me after his exam.

Doc Evans ready for his eye exam
Doc, some people aren’t happy when they find out they need glasses for the first time. How did you feel and what advice would you offer someone in this position?
I think it’s natural for a person who has always had “perfect vision” to succumb to the fact their vision is getting worse. At least it was for me! Most of the time, as you age, your vision worsens. It’s just part of life. My advice would be to get an eye exam every year to be aware of your vision and eye health. If you do need glasses, you should definitely get them. If you avoid it, you’re limiting what you can see in life. There’s such a great variety of styles available now, that I was actually excited to hear I’d be able to pick out a really cool pair that fits my personality.
How will having glasses impact your work as a musician?
As an artist and producer, I need to be able to see the music from a digital standpoint, which includes placing each bar or verse within the song. Clear vision is important for me to be accurate in what I do.
How did the exam itself go?
My eye exam was fun! Dr. Nakamura was very knowledgeable and told me he was looking for signs of diabetes and high blood pressure — just by looking in my eye! I think that is amazing. It was fast and painless, and now I know my eyes are healthy. I love my new glasses and see so much better!

Tyreke’s Trainer, LaMont Peterson, Talks about His Eye Exam and Transitions Lenses
LaMont Peterson has been professional basketball player Tyreke Evans’ trainer since Tyreke was 13 years old. These guys spend a lot of time together training for games—indoors and out—and they both know that healthy eye sight is key to staying on the ball. They even go to the same VSP practice, Natomas Optometry. LaMont recently had his annual eye exam with Dr. Myra Lew and got a new pair of glasses with Transitions® lenses. Transitions lenses darken and lighten automatically according to the surrounding light conditions. I chatted with LaMont afterward to see how his exam went and how he likes his new glasses.

LaMont wearing Joseph Abboud (JA160) with Transitions lenses
LaMont, I see you went with Transitions lenses. What made you choose Transitions over prescription sunglasses?
I like the convenience of not having to switch from glasses to sunglasses every time I go inside or outside. I guess prescription sunglasses would be nice too, but I really don’t want to have to carry two pairs of glasses around.
Did you learn anything new about your eye health during your eye exam with Dr. Lew?
My eyes are healthy, but Dr. Lew did tell me it’s important to protect your eyes from UV rays when you’re outside. I knew dark lenses made me more comfortable outdoors, but I didn’t realize there were also health benefits. Too much sun exposure is bad for your eyes. Wearing lenses that block the UV rays can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Transitions lenses take care of all this for me.
You and Tyreke have both had your annual eye exams now. Are you glad you had it?
I am. You know, it really doesn’t take that long, and then you know that your eyes are healthy. In this business, you can’t take chances like that.

Vision correction solutions have come a long way since the invention of eye glasses. I came across this article in PCWorld that describes technology that was brand new to me. The article describes glasses that can adjust focus manually via a lever on the frame that pushes fluid into a set of lenses, mimicking the function of the human eye. As we all age, presbyopia tends to set in, making it more difficult for people to see objects up close.
Since I don’t currently experience presbyopia, or at least don’t care to admit it, I asked a fellow co-worker what he thought of this technology. We concluded that there seemed to be some applications where the technology was practical and instances where it may not be as helpful. Professions like astronauts and mechanics, that do a lot of work with their hands at close distances could adjust the specs to their liking, then adjust them again when distant viewing is needed. However when driving, your eyes need to adjust quickly from dashboard (speedometer, radio, etc) to the windshield and dealing with traffic. This is where a progressive lens might be more beneficial.
It’s great to see optical technology improve over time. Maybe we’ll see this technology improve to the point where lenses can automatically adjust to the proper perspective.
