There is a fun, national campaign for children of all ages by the American Optometric Association called Be Wise About Your Eyes, which brings awareness to both parents and their children about the importance of taking care of our vision through regular eye exams.
Recently, the Hawai’i Optometric Association (HOA) held its annual Be Wise About Your Eyes day, and what better way to mix in some fun with this campaign than holding the event at the Hawai’i Children’s Discovery Center in Honolulu. If you’re in Hawai’i, be sure to visit the center and check out the sports vision exhibit sponsored by the HOA. Talk about interactive, this exhibit lets the keikis – that’s kids in Hawaiian – step up to the plate in the batting cage or stand in front of a phoropter while they play “doctor” in their white coat. Which is clearer, one or two? There is definitely a future doctor in the crowd.
VSP shared in the fun by talking to parents about the importance of a regular eye exam. Did you know that parents are encouraged to bring their babies for their first comprehensive eye exam to an eye doctor at six months? Did you also know that a child’s lack of learning can stem from the lack of seeing? Ask your VSP doctor about these and other information about how eye exams are an important part of our overall wellness.
By and large, it was a fun event for all who attended. Keikis were treated to a free vision screening by volunteering doctors while their parents learned a great deal in the inner workings of the visual system and how to keep theirs and their keikis’ eyes healthy, happy and safe.
