Wondering what lenses to choose? Consider UNITY™ Performance Optics

With a new year upon us, many of you may be about to take your annual trip to the eye doctor for an exam and to pick out new eyewear. While most of us give a lot of consideration to our choice of frames, how much thought do you put into choosing lenses and lens options like anti-reflective coatings?

Jessica G., a VSP employee and lens and frame fanatic, shares her thoughts on her new UNITY™ Performance Optics lenses and anti-reflective coatings below:

When I picked out my latest pair of Jil Sander frames, I took the opportunity to give UNITY lenses and anti-reflective coatings a spin. While I’m not an optical expert by any stretch, I am pretty picky about my eyewear. Very little irritates me more than dirty or smudged lenses, but my new UNITY lenses pass the test with flying colors. With a few swipes of my cleaning cloth, oils and dust wipe right away.

And the visual clarity? Flawless. Having worn glasses for almost thirty years, I can recognize usability and high quality when I see (through) it. Glare from my computer screen is minimal and nighttime driving suddenly seems less risky (thanks to the reduced ‘halo’ effect from oncoming headlights).

I couldn’t be more satisfied. My biggest optical decision now is what frames to use my 2012 eyecare benefits toward…I know they’ll be holding UNITY lenses.

Team Tyreke Scores with Great Vision (part 3 of 4)

Tyreke’s Trainer, LaMont Peterson, Talks about His Eye Exam and Transitions Lenses

LaMont Peterson has been professional basketball player Tyreke Evans’ trainer since Tyreke was 13 years old. These guys spend a lot of time together training for games—indoors and out—and they both know that healthy eye sight is key to staying on the ball. They even go to the same VSP practice, Natomas Optometry. LaMont recently had his annual eye exam with Dr. Myra Lew and got a new pair of glasses with Transitions® lenses. Transitions lenses darken and lighten automatically according to the surrounding light conditions. I chatted with LaMont afterward to see how his exam went and how he likes his new glasses.

LaMont, I see you went with Transitions lenses. What made you choose Transitions over prescription sunglasses?
I like the convenience of not having to switch from glasses to sunglasses every time I go inside or outside. I guess prescription sunglasses would be nice too, but I really don’t want to have to carry two pairs of glasses around.

Did you learn anything new about your eye health during your eye exam with Dr. Lew?
My eyes are healthy, but Dr. Lew did tell me it’s important to protect your eyes from UV rays when you’re outside. I knew dark lenses made me more comfortable outdoors, but I didn’t realize there were also health benefits. Too much sun exposure is bad for your eyes. Wearing lenses that block the UV rays can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Transitions lenses take care of all this for me.

You and Tyreke have both had your annual eye exams now. Are you glad you had it?
I am. You know, it really doesn’t take that long, and then you know that your eyes are healthy. In this business, you can’t take chances like that.

So I CAN blame my glasses for my poor golf game?!?

Well, maybe. As someone who swears by polarized lenses due to my Scandinavian love of water, I have gone through life assuming those lenses will do me just fine in whatever activities I participate in. After spending a week  learning all about Nike Vision while in the Competitive Advantage Tent at the Transitions PGA Championship last month, my eyes started crossing (definitely not helpful when playing golf) with all of the amazing lens technology that is currently out there.

There was one that completely reasonated with me because I could really identify with it. I asked Andy S. with Nike Vision to share with us why the Nike Max Optics and Max Golf Tint may be a better option than a polarized tint when trying to hit a little round contraption into that obscure hole hundreds of yards away…

VSP & Transitions Optical Launch New Mobile Eyecare Clinic

Today at an unveiling ceremony in Pinellas Park, FL, VSP and Transitions Optical launched a new mobile clinic that will provide charitable eye exams and eyewear to people in need across the U.S.

Today, more than 50 pre-screened students from Azalea Elementary located in Pinellas County are the first to benefit from the new clinic. The evaluation process for students grades K-5 included initial screenings by Prevent Blindness Florida. Students who failed the screenings will be given comprehensive examinations in the clinic, staffed by VSP eye doctors. For students requiring prescription lenses, VSP and Transitions Optical will provide the students with complimentary eyewear fitted with Transitions® lenses.

This partnership marks another milestone in furthering the efforts of the VSP Mobile Eyes® Program. What started as an extension of relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, the program features two mobile eyecare clinics, each with two comprehensive exam rooms and full eyeglass dispensaries, which respond to disasters and assist people in need in communities throughout the U.S. The new clinic will be the third clinic in the fleet and has the unique feature of a finishing lab featuring full-service lens finishing equipment, donated by Santinelli International, providing patients with glasses on-site.

“Transitions and VSP both have a strong commitment to supporting the community and helping people see better. Blown-glass contact lenses? Yikes.

New York Time's first coverage of the contact lens.

New York Times' first mention of the contact lens.

Did you know that the first usable contact lens was made in 1888 from blown glass? It’s a fact.

You can find this, and other interesting historical anecdotes about contact lenses in a recently published New York Times article.

Take a look; it’ll give you a fresh perspective on something many of us take for granted.

As I toss my daily, UV-blocking, soft contact lenses in the trash, I give thanks for technological advances.

The monocle is back. Really?

Dashing fashion statement? Half a pair of glasses? Or both?

Dashing fashion statement? Half a pair of glasses? Or both?

Needless to say, I didn’t see this trend coming.

According to an article on Telegraph.co.uk, monocles are making a come-back. Our intrepid blogger, Vernon D., documented the birth of the monocle in the 18th century, but I never anticipated that 300 years later this one-lensed eyepiece would be a hit on the high streets of London yet again.

Read the article, and tell me… are you investing in a monocle for 2010?
