VSP at the 2011 Transitions PGA Championship

VSP has been invited to participate in the PGA Championship for Healthy Sight, an official 72 hole PGA Tour Golf Tournament held at Innisbrook Golf Club and Resort on the Copperhead Course at Palm Harbor FL, from  3/13-20 (2 weeks before the Masters). This will be the third year we have a presence.

Transitions Optical (TOI) sponsors this event on 2 levels, first as the National Eyewear provider for the PGA Tour and also as the signature sponsor of this specific PGA tournament, held in Tampa, their own back yard. Sheila Johnson, owner of Innisbrook, is a well-known African American entrepreneur, she, and her former husband, founded the BET cable network.

The entire area behind the 18th green at Copperhead is known as the “Healthy Sight Village” in honor of Transitions’ partners that are working together to create a unique spectator experience at the Transitions Championship.

VSP’s participation is made up of two primary areas:

Community Outreach
In partnership with VSP network doctors who donate their time and services on the clinic, we were able to provide free eyecare and eyewear to nearly 150 children in the local area last week.

The VSP/Transitions mobile eye clinic is featured at the Championship to educate spectators about the importance of eye health and annual eye exams while increasing awareness of our charitable programs.

The Competitive Advantage Tent at the Healthy Sight Village
The Competitive Advantage Tent, created in partnership through Nike Vision, Transitions and VSP, will help spectators learn how to gain a competitive advantage in their golf game by improving their putting through personalized golf and vision tips. Spectators will learn how they can use their healthy sight to their advantage to shave strokes off their game on and around the greens, and will meet PGA pro Kenny Perry’s dream team, including Matt Killen, the TOUR’s youngest swing coach; Dr. Larry Lampert, sports/vision expert and Tyler Parsons, certified kinesiologist and golf fitness specialist, to get personalized golf and vision tips.

In February we asked our VSP doctors to submit names for the new VSP/Transitions mobile clinic. Thanks to the great response from our providers, we received over 600 names, and selected five for the general public to vote on: Eyenstein, LuSee, SeeAna, SeeBert and SeeCil. After a two week voting period, Eyenstein received the top number of votes and has become the official name for the third mobile clinic in the VSP Mobile Eyes® fleet!

Amanda S. from Dr. Churchill’s practice, Cedarville Eye, in MA, submitted the winning name: “I had originally come up with several other names, and while I was submitting them, the name ‘Eyenstein’ just popped in my head. The play on the name made me laugh a little, so I submitted it. I thought it was clever because as an opticianry apprentice, I know that healthy vision is smart!”

So I CAN blame my glasses for my poor golf game?!?

Well, maybe. As someone who swears by polarized lenses due to my Scandinavian love of water, I have gone through life assuming those lenses will do me just fine in whatever activities I participate in. After spending a week  learning all about Nike Vision while in the Competitive Advantage Tent at the Transitions PGA Championship last month, my eyes started crossing (definitely not helpful when playing golf) with all of the amazing lens technology that is currently out there.

There was one that completely reasonated with me because I could really identify with it. I asked Andy S. with Nike Vision to share with us why the Nike Max Optics and Max Golf Tint may be a better option than a polarized tint when trying to hit a little round contraption into that obscure hole hundreds of yards away…

Erik Estrada Explains Sightations

I ran into Erik Estrada at the Transitions PGA Championship in Florida and he graciously took the time to explain why he was running around handing out tickets to guests at the golf tournament. Not only did I get to witness the man in his “CHiP’s” uniform (very impressive he still fits in it by the way), turns out he had very good reasons for harassing the spectators…
