March for the Dream Photo Recap

Today’s post comes from guest blogger Dawn P. at VSP. Dawn was a volunteer for the Martin Luther King, Jr. March for the Dream event in Sacramento.

I went out into the crowd in front of the table and met with individuals and families. Spoke to them about why it was important to get your eyes checked on a yearly basis and was seeing if they need assistance with eyecare. If they did and met the qualification, I provided them the certificate and explained the process.  If they had vision insurance already, I helped reinforce how important it is to get checked yearly. The connection that we were having with all these wonderful people was truly a blessing. I cant wait to be apart of more up and coming events.

Here are a few pictures from the event:

Thousands of marchers started from three different locations around the city and ended at the Sacramento Convention Center in downtown to celebrate as a community.

VSP provided vouchers for free eyecare and glasses to those in need.

VSP joins the “March for the Dream” in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As America celebrates the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, VSP employees are proud to join marchers celebrating in Sacramento, the hometown of the company’s headquarters, as part of the MLK365 “March for the Dream.”

The event is expected to draw more than 20,000 attendees, including local residents, elected officials, and business, civic and community leaders representing many diverse ethnicities and backgrounds who are joining together to “March for the Dream” in remembrance of the visionary leader of the civil rights movement in the 1950′s and 1960′s. Marchers will start from three different locations around the city and end at the Sacramento Convention Center in downtown to celebrate as a community while enjoying a variety of diverse activities and performances. One of VSP’s mobile eye clinics, Eyenstein, will be inside the Convention Center as part of the celebration and available for tours. Participants in need who visit Eyenstein will also have the opportunity to receive a free gift certificate redeemable for a comprehensive eye exam at a local VSP doctor’s office and glasses, if needed.

As part of its participation in the “March for the Dream,” VSP continues its commitment to supporting diversity causes and embraces diversity as an integral part of its corporate culture. For more information on diversity at VSP, please click here.

VSP Mobile Clinic Stops at Loaves and Fishes

VSP Optometrist Wesley Umeda, O.D., examines a patient in-need onboard the VSP Mobile Eyes Clinic

I am constantly reading the blogs and articles from the VSP Mobile Clinic team and it always seemed like the people who participate have such rewarding experiences–I used to think it was just a marketing strategy.  That is until I joined up with Lori F., Vicki A., and the Mobile Clinics team at the Loaves and Fishes event this month in Sacramento.  Talk about an eye opener!!!  I arrived at the location at 8:00 am to help set up and was immediately approached by numerous people from Friendship Park asking how they could get an appointment to see the eye doctor.  I directed them to the event coordinator for Loaves and Fishes, but many of them were not seen at the clinic that day because patients had already been pre-registered.

Once the patients started arriving, I quickly realized exactly what the other Mobile Clinic volunteers had been blogging about.  The people we saw are often overlooked in society–most of them carrying everything they own in a backpack.  And yet, the energy and excitement they exuded was intoxicating. I heard more laughter and saw more smiles on their faces than at the mall on a weekend.

As the morning rolled on, the line continued to grow and it started heating up outside.  There was really nothing we could do to speed up the process as so many patients were getting their eyes dilated and had to wait inside for the doctor to reexamine them.  Jessie, a VSP Intern and fellow MRT, did such an amazing job with the people waiting outside and making sure all of the paperwork was in order so that we could focus on getting the patients in and out as quickly as possible.  I will never forget one of the patients named Brandy. She was so tired of waiting to see the doctor and was getting incredibly grumpy, so we invited her to wait in the clinic in the air conditioning.  She tried so hard to stay mad, but once she and I started picking out her frames there was nothing that could wipe the smile off of her face.

Dr. Umeda, Dr. Swan and Dr. Kim, VSP doctors who volunteered their time, all did such an amazing job with the patients. People kept telling me how nice they were to them.  It is so easy to take the kind of care I receive from my VSP doctor for granted, and it was just one of many reminders I had that day of just how blessed I am.  I feel kind of selfish for having gotten so much out of this experience when we were there to be giving to others, but I truly felt like I was doing something that made a difference.  So many of the people I met during the event were so gracious and grateful to us for helping them to see.  Without my glasses I can see about 6 inches from my face, so I cannot even begin to imagine how hard it is to have to go through life not being able to see what’s going on around me.

I would like to say a big thank you to Loaves and Fishes for everything they do for the people in our community.  I have always known VSP was a special place to work and am so grateful that our company not only gives back to the community, but allows and encourages its employees to do the same.  This event hit close to home for me and opened my eyes to so many of the things in life that I take for granted.  I cannot wait for the next opportunity I get to volunteer with the Mobile Clinics!

VSP Employees Celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Gil M. shares with us his recent experience as a VSP representative at “El Grito,” Mexican Independence Day. Gil works in IT and is a member of the VSP Latino Employee Resource Group in Sacramento.

The VSP Latino Employee Resource Group participated in the Mexican Independence Day, or “El Grito,” festivities in Sacramento,California, last week. We brought SeeZar, one of our Mobile Eyes clinics, to help educate attendees about the important role eyecare plays in a person’s healthcare routine as well as increase awareness about VSP charity programs. We were able to set up SeeZar right near the state capitol building where thousands of people saw us and came over to ask us questions.

Our main goal for participating was to connect VSP with the Mexican community. Of course, a 40-foot bus drew a lot of attention, so a lot of people came by to learn more about us! We even had some of the new Marchon 3D glasses, which were a hit with everyone. In addition to providing information about the importance of eyecare as well as VSP and its services, we provided 139 gift certificates for free eye exams and glasses to individuals who qualified for our Mobile Clinics charitable program. This was a value of more than $50,000 worth of exams and eyewear going to families in need! That made it all worth it.

VSP and Crocker Art Museum: Taking it to the streets!

We know that VSP has an affinity for outreach programs. So, when we learned of the Crocker Museum’s Art Ark program, we knew it was a perfect fit!

VSP embarked on a one-year sponsorship of the Art Ark program, a mobile art museum that travels to schools in the Sacramento region, giving students access to art that they may not otherwise have. Art is so often a visual representation, sharing a close tie with healthy eyesight.

Bev Thorn is a Crocker Art Museum docent and a VSP employee.

The Art Ark sponsorship isn’t VSP’s only support of the Crocker. VSP employees, such as Bev Thorn, are also active with the Crocker Art Museum. Bev, a 20-year veteran of volunteering at the Crocker, shares:

“I think it’s so awesome that VSP is sponsoring the Crocker’s Art Ark! Programs like art and music always seem to be among the first casualties of the budget ax, meaning fewer school kids get to visit the Crocker in person during these tough economic times.

The Art Ark is a perfect fit for VSP. Its traveling nature echoes the Mobile Clinics that support our eyecare outreach. And, it’s a perfect pairing with our ongoing commitment to kids through the Sight for Students® program.

I’ve been volunteering at the Crocker for years now. After 20 years of helping visitors engage with art in my role as a docent, I suppose I’m biased. But, the museum truly is an incredible asset to our region. And it’s going to get even bigger and better next year with the opening of major expansion.”
