Hindsight: A Look Back at My First 2 Years with Eyenstein

Today’s post is written by guest blogger Smith Wyckoff, an Associate Marketing Manager with Transitions Optical. Smith manages the mobile clinics partnership with VSP.

The clinic staff gather together with a patient at the Illumination Foundation event.

Looking back on the 2nd year of Transitions Optical’s partnership with the VSP Mobile Eyes program, I am thoroughly impressed at the way this outreach program delivers on its promise to provide eyecare and eyewear to those in need.  In every community across the United States, there are those who cannot afford proper eyecare and often are unaware that their vision needs correction.  At each and every event, we provide comprehensive eye exams and glasses to those who need them.  The response is resoundingly gracious and humbling to those who volunteer their time.  It’s always especially gratifying to see patients’ faces light up when they learn that not only are they getting brand new eyeglasses, they are also getting them fitted with Transitions lenses that very day!  [Note: this is for patient’s seen on the Eyenstein mobile clinic.]

Since VSP founded the program after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated New Orleans and Southeast Texas in 2005, in 2011, we had the opportunity to provide crisis outreach after a series of tornadoes ripped through northern Alabama and Joplin, Missouri.  For over 7 weeks, the clinics team was able to see hundreds of patients who had lost their homes and possessions.   For those of us requiring vision correction, try to imagine how difficult it would be to go a day without glasses – let alone all of your other possessions.  Throughout this relief program, the Mobile Clinics team was aided by volunteers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry.  Similarly, In Joplin, the Missouri Optometric Association stepped in to provide assistance.

Folks wait outside the clinic to have their eyes examined

Over the past two years, we’ve visited over 50 organizations and seen nearly 3,000 patients.  Our partnership clinic, Eyenstein, has traveled across America from our headquarters near Tampa, Florida, to help organizations in Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York City, Washington DC, Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and many, many more.  At Transitions Optical, we’ve supported nearly all of these events with volunteer support and have had almost 30 employees participate to date including kid-focused events at schools for our Eye Didn’t Know That! activities.  The roles at these events vary from trip to trip, but we could not be a valued partner with VSP without our volunteers and I am extremely thankful for those who have spent time on Eyenstein.

In true Transitions Optical style, we have set out to find opportunities to partner through outreach with industry leaders.  To date, in addition to those mentioned above, we’ve held successful events with the Essilor Vision Foundation, Prevent Blindness America, SVS Vision, Hoya, the Georgia Optometric Association, and the National Optometric Association.  We’re always looking for the right partners to help bring more impact to outreach events.

Sometimes patients have needs that go beyond 20/20 vision correction.  This is where VSP’s comprehensive vision exam trumps traditional vision screenings.   The volunteer doctors onboard Eyenstein detect cases of amblyopia (lazy eye) on almost every trip.  This condition is easily corrected if caught early enough.  We have also detected juvenile diabetes, high blood pressure, detached retinas, and other disorders that can impact much more than just vision – and many can be corrected if detected early enough.

During my most recent outreach in November – helping the homeless population of Orange County, California – I was taken aback by the sheer volume of health services being provided: flu shots, dental checks, hearing exams, pregnancy tests, STD diagnosis, and rows upon row of people waiting patiently for eye exams.  A special thanks to the Illumination Foundation for all that they do and for holding this annual event that helps so many.

I’m excited to see where 2012 takes us and how we can improve the current program to see more patients and continue to give back and increase the awareness of both comprehensive eye exams and protecting your eyes.

Team Tyreke Scores with Great Vision (part 3 of 4)

Tyreke’s Trainer, LaMont Peterson, Talks about His Eye Exam and Transitions Lenses

LaMont Peterson has been professional basketball player Tyreke Evans’ trainer since Tyreke was 13 years old. These guys spend a lot of time together training for games—indoors and out—and they both know that healthy eye sight is key to staying on the ball. They even go to the same VSP practice, Natomas Optometry. LaMont recently had his annual eye exam with Dr. Myra Lew and got a new pair of glasses with Transitions® lenses. Transitions lenses darken and lighten automatically according to the surrounding light conditions. I chatted with LaMont afterward to see how his exam went and how he likes his new glasses.

LaMont, I see you went with Transitions lenses. What made you choose Transitions over prescription sunglasses?
I like the convenience of not having to switch from glasses to sunglasses every time I go inside or outside. I guess prescription sunglasses would be nice too, but I really don’t want to have to carry two pairs of glasses around.

Did you learn anything new about your eye health during your eye exam with Dr. Lew?
My eyes are healthy, but Dr. Lew did tell me it’s important to protect your eyes from UV rays when you’re outside. I knew dark lenses made me more comfortable outdoors, but I didn’t realize there were also health benefits. Too much sun exposure is bad for your eyes. Wearing lenses that block the UV rays can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Transitions lenses take care of all this for me.

You and Tyreke have both had your annual eye exams now. Are you glad you had it?
I am. You know, it really doesn’t take that long, and then you know that your eyes are healthy. In this business, you can’t take chances like that.

In February we asked our VSP doctors to submit names for the new VSP/Transitions mobile clinic. Thanks to the great response from our providers, we received over 600 names, and selected five for the general public to vote on: Eyenstein, LuSee, SeeAna, SeeBert and SeeCil. After a two week voting period, Eyenstein received the top number of votes and has become the official name for the third mobile clinic in the VSP Mobile Eyes® fleet!

Amanda S. from Dr. Churchill’s practice, Cedarville Eye, in MA, submitted the winning name: “I had originally come up with several other names, and while I was submitting them, the name ‘Eyenstein’ just popped in my head. The play on the name made me laugh a little, so I submitted it. I thought it was clever because as an opticianry apprentice, I know that healthy vision is smart!”

So I CAN blame my glasses for my poor golf game?!?

Well, maybe. As someone who swears by polarized lenses due to my Scandinavian love of water, I have gone through life assuming those lenses will do me just fine in whatever activities I participate in. After spending a week  learning all about Nike Vision while in the Competitive Advantage Tent at the Transitions PGA Championship last month, my eyes started crossing (definitely not helpful when playing golf) with all of the amazing lens technology that is currently out there.

There was one that completely reasonated with me because I could really identify with it. I asked Andy S. with Nike Vision to share with us why the Nike Max Optics and Max Golf Tint may be a better option than a polarized tint when trying to hit a little round contraption into that obscure hole hundreds of yards away…

Erik Estrada Explains Sightations

Jill N. (with minimal personal space between her) and Erik Estrada.

I ran into Erik Estrada at the Transitions PGA Championship in Florida and he graciously took the time to explain why he was running around handing out tickets to guests at the golf tournament. Not only did I get to witness the man in his “CHiP’s” uniform (very impressive he still fits in it by the way), turns out he had very good reasons for harassing the spectators…
