Tyreke Evans Shoots Hoops for Troops

Tyreke Evans sports a vest on the USO tour

This past week, Tyreke Evans took a weeklong tour in Hawaii with the USO to show support for the troops. Tyreke joined seven other top names in basketball—Derrick Rose, D.J. Augustin, Al Horford, Robin Lopez, Brook Lopez, JaVale McGee, and Mike Miller—on the tour. Throughout the week, the stars led basketball clinics for children, toured military facilities, and played one-on-one with service members. The players also faced off in two intense games, with Tyreke scoring the winning point in one of them! I talked with Tyreke just after he returned and asked him a few questions about his experience.

Why did you get involved with the USO Hoops for Troops?
I got involved to support the troops and                                                                families who give up so much for the                                                                    freedom we enjoy.

What was your favorite part of the trip?
I liked talking to the troops about their war experiences. Most of the guys I talked to were around my age.

How did you like playing in the basketball games while you were there?
It was an honor to perform for our troops.

I saw some pictures of the players trying on military gear. What were you doing?
We played a simulated game at the barracks. Brook Lopez put on the armor piercing suit and got bit by the attack dog like they do in training.

Did you get to meet anyone in particular that stood out?
One of the wives told me that I was her husband’s favorite player. I played basketball with their son at the kids’ clinic, and she said her husband was currently stationed overseas and would be happy to hear about this.

What was the overall experience like for you?
I was a baby when my brother, Doc, served in Desert Storm. This made me appreciate him even more now that I’m older and understand what these troops do for the love of our country.

Trend Alert: Orange Crush

Eyeconic.com

I don’t know about you, but I get seriously bummed when I have to put away all the colorful stuff I wear all summer just because I don’t live in a sun shiny place like Maui. Yeah, black is eternally epic. Gray is awesome. But can’t I hang on to my “crush” on color all year round?

Turns out – I can! At least this season. I did some serious research—getting stuck in the longest line in the supermarket can come in handy—and there it was. In magazine after magazine. Bags, scarves and boots in some really strong colors, like orange! Oh yes, I’ve got a crush. An orange crush. Now, no one wants to look like a pumpkin or gigantic can of soda, so key word…moderation. But warming up all the gray, brown and black outfits was splashes of orange, yellow and magenta.

Tyreke sports orange

So, I decided the easiest way to keep my crush alive all winter was through a sunglass splash. And eyeconic.com has some hot orange sunglasses that look like me (or NBA star Tyreke Evans…yeah, I think he copied me). Ok, so, I used a webcam on my computer to try a pair of Nikes on live. It was fabulous, and since my style team was out of town I could confirm that my orange crush was real…Color rules.

Sports Vision: Beyond 20/20

While you’re watching the 2011 World Series, keep this in mind: many professional baseball players have vision that is two times better than average. Of course that doesn’t apply for St. Luis Cardinals Pitcher Jason Motte, who is very nearsighted, but it applies to many others. Learn how baseball players, and many other athletes including NBA star Tyreke Evans, improve their sports vision in this Better Health article.

NBA Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans stars in final VSP EyeFiles Episode: 3D Vision

Tyreke Evans is upping his game…and this time, it’s off the court. He stars in the final episode of VSP EyeFiles Season 2, which you can watch below or on our Facebook page. A big fan of 3D, Evans knows that as much as a third of the population experiences discomfort or “vision sickness” while watching 3D and that a smaller group of the population has trouble seeing 3D at all. Symptoms can include nausea, headaches, and eye strain. But did you know that those symptoms may signal an undiagnosed vision problem?

Whether you’re watching a game on ESPN 3D or watching Avatar, be sure to make an appointment with your eye doctor if you or your children have difficulty watching 3D content. Your eye doctor can often treat and correct these eye conditions, but the earlier they are addressed, the better. Learn more by watching the video clip, and enter to win a 3D prize pack for four!

Tyreke and VSP hit the court for deserving children

VSP Vision Care, Positive Coaching Alliance, Chris Johnson Basketball Academy and Sacramento Kings star Tyreke Evans hit the court to host a free basketball camp for 200 underserved Sacramento students. The camp started yesterday and runs through today at the Dr. Ephraim Williams Family Life Center in Sacramento.

The young campers have been shooting hoops, participating in basketball drills and engaging in question-and-answer sessions with Tyreke. Campers who qualify for VSP’s charity program have also enjoyed a free eye exam performed by VSP Optometrists and glasses in the on-site VSP mobile eyecare clinic.

“Having good vision is critical both on the court and off,” said Evans. “This basketball camp has given me an opportunity to increase awareness about the importance of vision, while spending time with some of my most important fans, Sacramento kids.”

“My favorite part was getting to meet Tyreke because he answered one of my questions and he was really fun,” said 11-year-old Davante, who had the opportunity to play a round of the popular shooting game “knockout” with Evans on Thursday. “I kept thinking, ‘I hope Tyreke doesn’t get me out (in “knockout”),’ but he did!”

Healthy vision is essential to a child’s ability to learn and achieve their academic potential. Since vision problems can begin at an early age, children should receive regular comprehensive eye exams — at 6-months-old, 2-years-old, before kindergarten and every year following.

Court vision: A look at some of the greatest in NBA history

VSP Sports Blogger, Alex Sigua

With the 2011 NBA Draft taking place tonight, I wanted to highlight some of the best players in NBA history when it comes to court vision. Court vision, as basketball aficionados would define it, is a player’s ability to see everything on the court during play, selecting the appropriate strategy and having the understanding and confidence to properly execute.

Jason Kidd

The current Dallas Mavericks point guard and new NBA Champion always comes up in conversations about players with the best court vision. Kidd ranks third all-time among NBA players in triple-doubles with 107, which is when a player records double figures in three statistical categories such as points, assists and rebounds. Many players say Jason has eyes in the back of his head.

Saying (Kidd) has eyes in the back of his head is true for him, because his vision is just … crazy,” said New Orleans Hornets center Emeka Okafor.

Steve Nash

The seven-time NBA All-Star has been lighting up basketball courts with his blazing speed and piercing court vision for 14 seasons. One of his most admirable qualities is the fact he continues to elevate his game the further he evolves in his career.

I admire what a great point guard he is and his longevity,” said New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul. “It’s tough going out there going against 20- and 21-year-olds night in and night out, and he’s still one of the toughest guys in the League to defend.

Larry Bird

While Bird may ultimately be recognized as one of the greatest shooters, if not THE greatest in NBA history, his legendary court vision is what helps set him apart as possibly the greatest small forward in NBA history.

Bird also had the uncanny ability to make his teammates better, as fellow Celtics players Kevin McHale and Robert Parish entered the Basketball Hall of Fame after teaming up with the player known as “Larry Legend” to win three NBA titles.

Larry Bird made every player on the court better and he made everybody believe they can win,” said Lakers great Magic Johnson.

Team Tyreke Scores with Great Vision (part 4 of 4)

Tyreke’s brother, Doc Evans, talks about needing glasses for the first time ever

Doc Evans, Tyreke Evans’ brother, just had his annual eye exam by Dr. Ryan Nakamura at Natomas Optometry. Doc is a musician, and good vision is important to him. During his eye exam, he discovered he needed glasses for the first time ever and shared that experience with me after his exam.

Doc Evans ready for his eye exam

Doc, some people aren’t happy when they find out they need glasses for the first time. How did you feel and what advice would you offer someone in this position?
I think it’s natural for a person who has always had “perfect vision” to succumb to the fact their vision is getting worse. At least it was for me! Most of the time, as you age, your vision worsens. It’s just part of life. My advice would be to get an eye exam every year to be aware of your vision and eye health. If you do need glasses, you should definitely get them. If you avoid it, you’re limiting what you can see in life. There’s such a great variety of styles available now, that I was actually excited to hear I’d be able to pick out a really cool pair that fits my personality.

How will having glasses impact your work as a musician?
As an artist and producer, I need to be able to see the music from a digital standpoint, which includes placing each bar or verse within the song. Clear vision is important for me to be accurate in what I do.

How did the exam itself go?
My eye exam was fun! Dr. Nakamura was very knowledgeable and told me he was looking for signs of diabetes and high blood pressure — just by looking in my eye! I think that is amazing. It was fast and painless, and now I know my eyes are healthy. I love my new glasses and see so much better!

Tyreke’s Trainer, LaMont Peterson, Talks about His Eye Exam and Transitions Lenses

LaMont Peterson has been professional basketball player Tyreke Evans’ trainer since Tyreke was 13 years old. These guys spend a lot of time together training for games—indoors and out—and they both know that healthy eye sight is key to staying on the ball. They even go to the same VSP practice, Natomas Optometry. LaMont recently had his annual eye exam with Dr. Myra Lew and got a new pair of glasses with Transitions® lenses. Transitions lenses darken and lighten automatically according to the surrounding light conditions. I chatted with LaMont afterward to see how his exam went and how he likes his new glasses.

LaMont wearing Joseph Abboud (JA160) with Transitions lenses

LaMont, I see you went with Transitions lenses. What made you choose Transitions over prescription sunglasses?
I like the convenience of not having to switch from glasses to sunglasses every time I go inside or outside. I guess prescription sunglasses would be nice too, but I really don’t want to have to carry two pairs of glasses around.

Did you learn anything new about your eye health during your eye exam with Dr. Lew?
My eyes are healthy, but Dr. Lew did tell me it’s important to protect your eyes from UV rays when you’re outside. I knew dark lenses made me more comfortable outdoors, but I didn’t realize there were also health benefits. Too much sun exposure is bad for your eyes. Wearing lenses that block the UV rays can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Transitions lenses take care of all this for me.

You and Tyreke have both had your annual eye exams now. Are you glad you had it?
I am. You know, it really doesn’t take that long, and then you know that your eyes are healthy. In this business, you can’t take chances like that.
