VSP making strides with diabetes education

VSP was recently invited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to present at an event celebrating the success of the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP). NDEP is the government’s leading public education program for diabetes prevention and control that offers evidence-based, culturally tailored and easy-to-read materials. VSP was invited to present on our partnership with NDEP to produce educational materials and to serve as a role model to other organizations. We shared the actions we have taken to raise awareness around the link between diabetes awareness and healthy vision, including:

  • Spreading the importance of eye exams for the early detection of diabetes
  • Offering continuing education courses to eyecare professionals about diabetes care
  • Reaching out to optometry students to educate them about their role in health care
  • Providing tools to eyecare professionals to educate patients about diabetes and their eyes
  • VSP’s reach through membership and charity work including Mobile Clinics and Sight for Students

Heart-healthy and Eye-healthy

Andy Gee a.k.a. GeeWhizKid

I love trying soups from different chefs (especially because I don’t seem to have the soup-making gene).  So the other day I found a “winter cabbage and cilantro” soup on a menu.

I’ve learned from our GetFIT program that the more colorful the vegetable, the better it is for me, so just to be sure, I looked up red cabbage.

Sure enough, I found several sources that stated the vision benefits of red cabbage, including World’s Healthiest Foods and Buzzle.com, which state the following:

“…other important health benefits of cabbage are, providing relief in constipation, improving vision, lowering the level of serum cholesterol, prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and inhibiting the growth of tumors”

That article listed sulforaphane , so looking up that word lead me to discover that it’s found in cruciferous veggies such as brocolli, brussel sprouts, (and of course, cabbage).

UV Protection – Protect Your Eyes

What we call a “rainbow” is the spectrum of light energy from the sun that we can see. At each end of this visible light are other forms of invisible energy— from radio waves to x-rays. Some of this energy is in the form of ultraviolet waves, or UV. UV is not normally visible, but you might have seen its purplish glow from a special “black light” bulb that makes things glow in the dark.

While we can’t see ultraviolet radiation, it can see—and harm—us if we are not careful. Even on an overcast day, UV light from the sun can cause sunburn of our skin and the cornea of our eyes, which is called “photokeratitis.”  Over a long time, it can increase your chance of cataracts (a clouding of the lens of the eye) and damage to your retina that might lead to total blindness.

Sunscreen protects your skin from overexposure to UV rays. Proper lenses can safely block UV radiation and protect your eyes.

Be Glare Aware!
Glare, or extreme brightness, can be distracting and even dangerous. The direct rays of the sun are the most powerful source of glare and UV radiation, but glare can also be reflected off roads, buildings, water, and snow. Special “polarized” lenses reduce or eliminate glare and reflections. They work by selectively absorbing the reflected glare while transmitting useful light from the scene.

Get with the program. GetFIT

I am not an athlete. I’m a nerd.

In elementary school, I failed the President’s Physical Fitness Test. In high school, the most time I spent on a court or field was in the stands, playing with the pep band. In my job as a technical communicator at VSP, the heaviest lifting I do involves right-clicking a mouse. The physical exertion my kids expend in one hour will exceed the average physical exertion I expend in two months. One of my nicknames is “Android.” How nerdy is that? I am not an athlete.

As an adult, I face an uphill battle trying to stay at my ideal weight, in my right size pants, and out of the doctor’s office.

That’s why I’m a willing participant in a wellness program at VSP called GetFIT.

What’s GetFIT?
